Awards, honors, appointments & recognition

James Halpern (Psychology), director of the Institute for Disaster Mental Health, and Karla Vermeulen (Psychology), deputy director, have been awarded a $40,000 grant by the United Nations for their project titled, “Proposal to United Nations Emergency Preparedness and Support Unit.” Halpern has also been awarded a $21,800 grant from the Health Research Inc. for his project titled “2010-11 IDMH Proposed Scope of Work for the NYS DOH: “Essential Principles & Practices,” and “Assisting People Exposed to Radiation.”

Thomas Meyer and Mary Sawyer (Secondary Education) have been awarded a $23,000 grant by the National Writing Project Corporation for their project titled, “HVWP Commissioned Work: TASW-F Design Team.”  Meyer has also been awarded a $7,000 grant from the National Writing Project Corporation for his project titled “National Evaluation Grant Fall 2010.”

Howie Good (Communication & Media) has had his poem, Autumn Song, nominated for the Pushcart Prize by the literary Splash of Red. For more information, visit http://splashofred.squarespace.com/.

Spencer Salend, Barbara Chorzempa, and Catherine Whittaker (Educational Studies) have been awarded a $1,459,758 grant by the U.S. Department of Education for their project titled “Preparing Reflective & Effective Practitioners (PREP) for Student and Professional Success.”

Margaret Gutierrez (Migrant Education) has been awarded a $26,232 grant from Geneseo Migrant Center BOCES for her project titled “Even Start Transitions – Subcontract with BOCES Geneseo Migrant Education 10-11.”

Lee Bernstein (History) has been awarded a $134,517 grant by the Ulster County BOCES for his project titled “An American Story: Struggles and Triumphs” (Subcontract to Ulster BOCES).
