Andrew Limbong’s ’11 (Creative Writing) essay, “Eating the Forbidden Ham Sandwich,” was chosen as runner-up in The New York Time’s “Modern Love” essay competition. His essay was published in the Style section on May 5, 2011.
Limbong’s essay was selected from a field of approximately 1,400 submissions. He is the second New Paltz student in the English Department in three years to be selected as runner-up for this essay competition. Lee Conell ’09 (English), who is currently pursuing a master’s degree in English here, was the runner-up in 2008 for her essay titled “My Dropout Boyfriend Kept Dropping In.”
Limbong worked as an intern at WAMC Northeast Public Radio from January to May 2011, where he wrote and conducted research for short and feature-length stories. Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Greg Fry recalled working with Limbong.
“If I had the ability to hire Andrew, I’d do it in a heartbeat. His writing is fantastic, as you can see in that piece published in The New York Times. When he worked on stories for me, he always came back with something that was clear and concise,” Fry said.
