With the support of a Senior Research Fulbright grant, Professor Francois Deschamps (Art) spent the academic year 2010-11 teaching in Bamako, Mali—one of Africa’s fastest growing cities. “Sustainable World: Bamako/New York,” on view through March 30 at the Calumet Gallery in New York City, features photographs by his students from the Conservatoire des Arts et Metiers Multimédia in Bamako and their counterparts from SUNY New Paltz. The exhibition aims to serve as a visual record, presenting issues relative to the search for a sustainable world. These issues are addressed photographically in a variety of means and styles, including metaphorical and documentary.
After April 2, prints of the Malian students’ work will be available to purchase for $25 each (all of which will go directly to the student). For information about purchasing prints, contact Professor Deschamps at deschamf@newpaltz.edu.
