Professor David Elstein (Philosophy) has published an article “Mou Zongsan’s New Confucian Democracy” in Contemporary Political Theory 11.2 (May 2012): 192-210). Although not well known in the US and Europe, Mou is considered the most important Chinese philosopher of the 20th century. This article examines how he argues for democracy from a Confucian perspective and why he thinks it is important for Chinese people to develop democracy from their own philosophical traditions. It is the first publication in English on Mou’s political thought. The full abstract is here.
