Local and national media recognize President Poskanzer’s contributions to New Paltz

Since President Steven Poskanzer announced last Friday that he has accepted the presidency of Carleton College, the general reaction on campus has been one of shock and sadness, but many at New Paltz and in the local and national media reports about his departure have commented positively on his achievements during his nine-year tenure at New Paltz. Four members of the college’s academic, professional and classified staff will receive 2010 Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence this year at the Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 23. Smolen Observatory now open for night sky viewing

New Paltz is now offering public Astronomy Nights at the Muriel and Jack Smolen Observatory on the first and third Wednesday of each month when the College is in session. The College held a dedication ceremony and grand opening for the Smolen Observatory, which houses four telescopes for viewing the night sky, on April 21, at the observatory on the southern end of the campus. The observatory was funded from a bequest from Muriel Smolen. Sharpen your karaoke skills; the May 2010 BBQ will soon be here The annual Faculty and Staff Appreciation Picnic and Barbecue, started by President Steven Poskanzer to recognize the hard work of the College’s employees at the end of each academic year, is scheduled for 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 25, in the Old Main Quadrangle. Confidentiality changes in SEI packet information The Student Evaluation of Instruction (SEI) will be administered from April 29 to May 13. The College has learned that SEI data is considered public information under New York State’s Freedom of Information Law (FOIL). The SEI envelope packet with the label that reads, “Confidential,” is now qualified to read “to the extent allowed by law.” Faculty who participate in this process should be aware that these documents could become public if such a request were received.
