Professor L.H. Roper (History) presented a paper, “The Fall of New Netherland and Seventeenth-Century Anglo-American Imperial Formation,” at the 2012 Annual Meeting of the British Group in Early American History.  The meeting was co-hosted by the Universities of Dundee (with whom SUNY New Paltz has an international exchange program) and St. Andrews in Scotland. The paper was part of a session “Translatio Imperii: Anglo-Dutch Competition and Cooperation in North America, 1600-1700,” which is part of a larger collaborative project, involving Dr. Jaap Jacobs (independent scholar) and Dr. Martine van Ittersum (University of Dundee) that considers seventeenth-century Anglo-Dutch relations from...

The 2012-13 academic year is off to an exciting start, with 1,850 new first-year and transfer students and approximately 1,200 graduate students joining the campus community. Students arrived on campus on Thursday, Aug. 23. Faculty, staff, and administrators gathered in LC 100 on Friday, Aug. 24, to hear President Christian’s State of the College address, his first since his inauguration as New Paltz’s eighth president—and also the first presented to all faculty and staff, together, as a single community. President Christian joins AAC&U leadership group

President Christian has accepted an invitation to join the Presidents’ Trust, a leadership group within the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) that is committed to and advocates for liberal education within the nation’s higher education system. The Presidents’ Trust is a select network of about 100 AAC&U member college presidents who support the organization’s Liberal Education and America’s Promise (LEAP).  This initiative promotes liberal education as the best preparation for today’s students as they begin work and citizenship in an ever-changing world.  According to the AAC&U website, “The Presidents’ Trust consists of people who believe in liberal...

New Paltz’s Office of Communication and Marketing was recognized by The State University of New York Council for University Advancement (SUNYCUAD) with three Awards for Excellence. The recognition included two Best of Category awards: one in the Media Relations category for its 9/11 Tenth Anniversary Commemorative Events and one in the Student Recruitment Package category for its admissions package that incorporated the elements of print, video and the web. You may have—okay, you likely have—noticed a construction project or two upon your return to campus. Hopefully, you’ve had a chance to stroll down the new Mohonk Walk, a beautiful pathway that provides pedestrian access along the College’s eastern edge (between the Excelsior Concourse and the site of the future new science building near the campus’s main entrance). Take note: beautification of the surrounding landscape is continuing. The walk was lined recently with oak trees and stone benches are being installed.
