Retired New Paltz University Police Chief Raymond Bryant was honored for his dedication and service to the SUNY system at the yearly Ulster County Chiefs of Police Awards Banquet.  Bryant retired after 39 years of service. The event was held at the Wiltwick Golf Course on May 9.

SUNY New Paltz hosts Turkish Night

Turkish cuisine, live traditional Turkish music, a photo exhibition, and baklava and other sweet treats were some of the highlights of the recent Turkish Night, held in the MPR on May 3. Some 150 Turkish students are currently enrolled at New Paltz, many of whom participated in this celebration of their country and its culture. The event was hosted by Assemblyman Kevin Cahill ’77, who is the founder of The Friends of Turkish People Legislators Association, and the Turkish Cultural Center.

Marketing association wins three awards

The SUNY New Paltz chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA), which took home a bronze medal at the International Collegiate Conference in New Orleans this year, won more awards at the New Paltz Student Club and Leadership Awards reception held on campus. The AMA received three awards, including the Best Large-Scale Event of the Year, Outstanding Promotional Award, and the Outstanding Recruitment Award. The awards recognize the AMA’s success in organizing the 16th Annual Business Day Conference, promoting the chapter, and recruiting and retaining members. The article, Beware the Impact of Invasive Plants, was published on May 6. It was originally written for a class taught by Cary Institute Visiting Scientist David Richardson (Biology).

Awards, Honors, Appointments and Recognition

Professor Jason Wrench (Communication and Media), was named as an “ECA Distinguished Teaching Fellow” at the recent meeting of the Eastern Communication Association in Cambridge, MA. The award recognizes a record of distinguished teaching that infuses current research into classroom content. Professor Mary Kahl (Communication and Media) received a competitive research grant from the Urban Communication Foundation at the annual Eastern Communication Association Convention, held recently in Cambridge, MA. The grant will fund research in Paris, France, to investigate the communicative behaviors associated with the Promenade Plantee.

Professor David Elstein (Philosophy) has published an article “Mou Zongsan’s New Confucian Democracy” in Contemporary Political Theory 11.2 (May 2012): 192-210). Although not well known in the US and Europe, Mou is considered the most important Chinese philosopher of the 20th century. This article examines how he argues for democracy from a Confucian perspective and why he thinks it is important for Chinese people to develop democracy from their own philosophical traditions. It is the first publication in English on Mou’s political thought. The full abstract is here.

Faculty and Staff Appreciation Picnic and Barbecue. May 23, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. The Faculty and Staff Appreciation Picnic and Barbecue will be held in the Athletic and Wellness Center. As a gesture of thanks for the faculty’s and staff’s service throughout the year, college administrators will serve a picnic BBQ lunch to all who attend. Staff will be recognized through the presentation of our campus Classified Staff Presidential Recognition Awards. The picnic is sponsored by the Office of the President. Lunch hours will be extended to one hour on May 23, where necessary, for employees to attend.

The search for a new dean of the School of Education has been completed. Michael S. Rosenberg, who is currently associate dean for research in the School of Education and a professor in the Department of Special Education at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., will take on this role August 3. Tanhena Pacheco Dunn, Esq. has been appointed New Paltz’s first executive director for compliance and campus climate. She will assume her duties on June 18 and will report directly to President Donald P. Christian. In this new role, Pacheco Dunn will be responsible for monitoring the college’s compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures as they apply to: Title IX provisions that deal with sexual assault, sexual harassment, and hostile workplace issues; affirmative action; and New York State ethics legislation.
