Thank you to all who participated in the College’s 6th Annual Cleanup Day on April 3. Organized by the Residence Hall Student Association (RHSA) and Circle K, the event drew together volunteers who pitched in to pick up stray trash on campus. K9s on campus
As part of an ongoing police continuing education program, the University Police Department hosted the Ulster County K9 Training Group for a day of training on March 27. The group of Ulster County Police Officers and their K9 partners conducted several search, rescue, and tracking exercises at several spots on the campus throughout the day.
Hugo wins Mascot Madness
Hugo the Hawk has been declared the winner of the first annual GenerationSUNY Mascot Madness contest! Responding to the announcement, President Christian said, “It’s a great testament to the tremendous amount of pride our community has for the school and our distinguished athletics program.” Read more about it here.
GEM Fellowship awarded to Ranysha Ware
AMP/CSTEP student Ranysha Ware ’13 (Computer Science) was awarded a GEM Fellowship from the National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science, Inc. Ware will intern at Massachusetts Institute of Technology Lincoln Laboratory this summer and then head to the University of Massachusetts-Amherst as a GEM Fellow in their Computer Science program.
Hudson Valley Writing Project teacher consultant and New Paltz alumna receives Fulbright Award
Christine McCartney ’07g (English), an English Language Arts teacher at Newburgh Free Academy and a teacher consultant for the Hudson Valley Writing Project, has been awarded a Distinguished Fulbright Awards in Teaching grant to conduct research in Finland. McCartney is one of approximately 20 U.S. citizens who will travel abroad in 2012-13 through the Distinguished Fulbright Awards in Teaching Program. During her six-month stay in Finland, McCartney will study at the University of Tampere, where she will conduct seminars for local teachers and students, observe classes, and complete a capstone project in which she will research how Finnish teachers...
Awards, Honors, Appointments and Recognition
The Hudson Valley Psychological Association has awarded New Paltz a Psychologically Healthy Community Award in recognition of our contributions to the psychological health of our communities. Professor James Halpern (Psychology), who is the director of the Institute of Disaster Mental Health (IDMH), was notified of the award and invited to accept on behalf of the College at an event that will be held at the Henry A. Wallace Center at the FDR Presidential Library and Museum on June 8.
Publications
The third edition of the college art appreciation textbook, “The Power of Art,” co-written by Professor Susan Lewis (History) and husband Richard Lewis (Marist College), has been published by Wadsworth/Cengage Learning (2014). The new edition features more works by women and non-Western artists. It also highlights the convergence of artistic media (drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, architecture, and design) in contemporary art, as well as the cross-pollination of art across the globe enabled by the internet.
