The First Annual Generation SUNY Mascot Madness competition is underway—and the New Paltz mascot, Hugo the Hawk, has made it into the semi-finals! In round one, Hugo advanced over SUNY Purchase’s Perseus the Panther by a margin of 928 votes. Round two saw Hugo emerge over Cortland’s Red Dragon, and in Round three Hugo beat Maritime’s Pete the Privateer with 56 percent of the vote. The online contest includes 30 SUNY campuses representing 472 athletic teams and more than 220,000 students. Read more about it, and cast your vote for Hugo here!

The SUNY New Paltz Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) organized the first-ever New York Special Olympics Unified Basketball Tournament in March. The term “unified basketball” describes teams that consist of Special Olympians and “partners,” who are able-bodied players. Twelve teams from throughout the state came to compete in a full day of basketball on Sunday, March 10. Student athletes from every New Paltz team helped with the event. The Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creative Activities (RSCA) Student Travel Award (STA) continue to help fund student participation in meetings and conferences held away from New Paltz. Three undergraduate Theatre students, Genevieve Bozek ’13, Adam Harrison ’14, and Brittany Martel ’15, represented SUNY New Paltz by performing at the American College Theatre Festival in Hyannis, Mass., during a conference held Jan. 29-Feb. 2, 2013. Head coach Jamie Seward of the New Paltz women’s basketball team has been named a finalist for the 2013 Russell Athletic/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year award. He earns a finalist position after being named the 2013 Russell Athletic/WBCA NCAA Division III Region 2 Coach of the Year. A draft strategic plan, which will guide many of the decisions and planning for the College over the next three-to-five years, has been circulated by the Strategic Planning Steering Committee. “The Dark I Know,” a musical written and directed by New Paltz student Alex Eisen ’13 and NYU student John Watts, was awarded the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) Musical Theatre Award for 2013. Eisen wrote the libretto and lyrics, and Watts was the project’s composer.
