Kristine Harris (History, Asian Studies) served as visiting associate professor at the University of Chicago in spring 2009. There she developed two new courses, Women Chinese Film and Shanghai Film Mediascape, for graduate students and undergraduates in cinema and media studies, East Asian languages and civilizations and gender studies. Harris also taught Chinese cinema at the University of Chicago in spring 2007. At New Paltz, she will offer a revised version of Shanghai Film Mediascape in spring 2010.

Mary Kahl (Communication and Media) won the 2009 Neil Postman Award from the New York State Communication Association. The award, which was presented to Kahl at the organization’s convention in October, recognizes outstanding and sustained work with students in research endeavors within the discipline of communication.

Sara Pasti (Dorsky Museum) has been awarded a $4,818 grant by the Hudson Valley Greenway Communities Council for a project titled “Revisiting the Hudson: 19th Century Landscape Painting in Context.” The symposium will be held in conjunction with the exhibition, “Views and Visions: The Hudson River to Niagara Falls – 19th Century American Landscape Paintings from the New-York Historical Society,” which is on display through Dec. 13 at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art. The interdisciplinary symposium will contextualize 19th-century American landscape painting.

OUTSTANDING ASSESSMENT AWARD: Lynn Spangler (Communication and Media), center, received the 2009 award for outstanding service in educational assessment at the college’s General Education (GE) forum on Oct. 28. Howard Good (Communication and Media) published his 11th poetry chapbook, “My Heart Draws a Rough Map,” with Blue Hour Press. The chapbook consists of 19 related prose poems with illustrations by Mia Christopher. Good was also recently nominated for the fifth time for the Best of the Net anthology for a series of prose poems titled “Ghosts of Breath.” The series appeared earlier this year in the literary journal Bartleby Snopes. Good was also nominated for a Puschcart Prize for his poem, “Repairing the World,” which appeared in the literary journal “tinfoil dresses.” This is his fourth Pushcart nomination in four years.

Twenty-five students from New Paltz, including members of the American Marketing Association, visited Donald Trump’s multi-million dollar golf course in Westchester County on Oct. 9. The Trump National Golf Course, which covers more than 75,000 square feet, provides membership to more than 250 at an initial fee of $300,000. The students received a tour and attended a workshop on marketing to the affluent.

Jan Hammond (Educational Administration) was named the New York State Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development’s (NYSASCD) Educator of the Year. The School of Education hosted a reception to honor her on Oct. 14.

Mary Kahl (Communication and Media) was awarded the 2009 Feminist Scholar/Mentor Award by the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language and Gender. The award recognizes sustained scholarship about women’s communication practices and an exemplary record of academic mentorship. Kahl will receive the award in October at the annual OSCLG Conference in Los Angeles.

The New Paltz collegiate chapter of the American Marketing Association in the School of Business, under the direction of faculty adviser is Ted Clark (Business), is one of two chapters nationwide to be awarded a $500 grant from the International American Marketing Association Collegiate Division. The grant is to help support the organization’s regional conference which took place on Oct. 16 in van den Berg Hall.

Mohammad Zunoubi (Electrical and Computer Engineering) was awarded the 2009 United States Air Force Summer Faculty Fellowship. He spent 10 weeks at the Brooks City Air Force Base in Texas and conducted research related to advance techniques in computational electromagnetics. His work has already resulted in the submission of two journal papers and two invited national and international conference presentations to be held in January 2010.

Stephen Kitsakos (Theatre Arts) has published an article in The Sondheim Review, Winter 2009 issue. The article, “Sondheim Choralis,” analyzes and explores the process of singing Sondheim choral music with his 100-voice Music Theatre Singing Ensemble. This is Kitsakos’ second article published this year in The Sondheim Review.

Corwin Senko (Psychology) and Viviana Fyffe ’90 (Psychology) published a study titled “An Evolutionary Perspective on Effective versus Ineffective Pick-up Lines” in a forthcoming volume of The Journal of Social Psychology.

Joan Hollister (Business) and Sally Schultz (Business) were among the 25 scholars invited to Mount Vernon on Oct. 9 and 10 to participate in a planning conference on the Financial Papers of George Washington.
