IN MEMORIAM Russell Waines (Geology, Emertius) died on Jan. 6, 2009. He was 81. Waines, a resident of New Paltz, retired from the college in 2006 after 43 years. Joanne Rein, a retired librarian from the Sojourner Truth Library, died on Nov. 27, 2008. She was 82. During her tenure at New Paltz (1967-1993), she served as Head of Serials and Acquisitions Librarian.

AWARDS, HONORS, APPOINTMENTS AND RECOGNITION Ted Clark (Business Institute, Business) received a $17,446 grant from a major hospital consortium to study health care practices in the Hudson Valley. The study team will include 13 undergraduate and two graduate business students. In addition, Clark has been elected to the position of second vice president for the Business Marketing Association’s Hudson Valley Region and will be responsible for program development. PUBLICATIONS David Appelbaum (Philosophy) published a new book, “Jacques Derrida’s Ghost: A Conjuration” (SUNY Press, 2009). It addresses three key themes of the late philosopher’s work: the other, death and mourning. In its manner of writing about these themes, the book responds to Derrida’s own reflections on how philosophy is written. On Dec. 4, Appelbaum gave a brief talk about the book on campus. Brian Obach (Sociology) published a book chapter, titled “Labor and the Environment,” in 20 Lessons in Environmental Sociology (Oxford 2009).
