Sarah Wyman (English) published “Beyond the Veil: Indeterminacy and Iconoclasm in the Art of Robert Hayden, Janet Kozachek, and Tom Feelings” in The Comparatist, 36: 2012. Anne Gorrick (Accounting Services) has published I-Formation (Book 2), her third full-length book of poetry, with Shearsman Books (Bristol, UK). She has also recently published work in several electronic and print journals.

New Paltz American Marketing Association chapter receives awards

The New Paltz chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA), which won a bronze medal at the AMA International Collegiate Conference in New Orleans this year, also received several awards at the New Paltz Student Club and Leadership Awards reception held on campus. The AMA received three awards including the Best Large-Scale Event of the Year, Outstanding Promotional Award, and the Outstanding Recruitment Award. The awards recognize the AMA’s success in organizing the 16th Annual Business Day Conference, promoting the chapter, and recruiting and retaining members. The Center for Research, Regional Education, and Outreach (CRREO) is one of 10 members of the Mid-Hudson Sustainability Planning Consortium, which has received an $800,000 grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Agency’s (NYSERDA) Cleaner, Greener Communities Program (CGC). The grant will be used to develop and implement a regional sustainability plan. Neil C. PsychTable.org is a new, online project co-created by Daniel Glass ’12g (Psychology), with Niruban Balachandran (Rutgers University) and Timothy Nabzdyk (Mississippi State University and SUNY Buffalo), to collect information related to these issues. Evolved psychological adaptations (EPAs) of the human mind are the focus of Glass’s research, and PsychTable.org is the first international collaborative endeavor to classify them. Professor Napatsorn Jiraporn (Marketing) received the 2012 Distinguished Dissertation Award in the social sciences category from Binghamton University, where she completed her Ph.D. program. A faculty review panel selected Jiraporn’s dissertation, “Maintenance Versus Attainment Goals: Influence of Self-Regulation Goal Type on Goal Pursuit Behaviors,” for this award using the following criteria: the level of creativity and originality of the work; the methodological and substantive quality of the research; and the degree to which the research makes a significant contribution to the discipline. Why do people use cell phones while driving, despite the activity’s classification as a crime? Students in Eve Waltermaurer’s Criminological Theory class explored a variety of theories that explain the behavior, and implemented several real-world solutions to help address the problem. One theory suggests that because distracted driving is viewed as normal in our society, and engaging in that behavior doesn’t break any social norms, the criminality of it isn’t enough to dissuade people from doing it.
