The article, Beware the Impact of Invasive Plants, was published on May 6. It was originally written for a class taught by Cary Institute Visiting Scientist David Richardson (Biology).

EOP recognizes student achievement at Chi Alpha Epsilon Induction Ceremony

10th Annual Chi Alpha Epsilon Induction Ceremony

The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) hosted the 10th Annual Chi Alpha Epsilon Induction Ceremony on Friday, April 27.  The public recognition and pinning ceremony recognized the academic achievements of 44 EOP undergraduates. An additional 24 students were recognized for earning an upgrade distinction. SUNY New Paltz Director of Advising for the School of Business and former EOP Advisor, Rendesia Scott ’96, delivered the keynote address. Students Perform New Work in New York City Directors Salon

Students from the Department of Theatre Arts participated in a performance of a new work devised by Professor Anita Gonzalez (Theatre Arts) at The Working Theatre in Manhattan in April. The Working Theatre sponsors the Directors Salon, an organization that provides directors a chance to showcase their work. The Salon selected the play Liverpool Trading <—> New York by Gonzalez, author and playwright Richard Aellen, and Annette Storckman ’12 (Creative Writing) to present in their annual season. Students organize Relay For Life on campus

Approximately 500 people attended the New Paltz American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, an event held over a 12-hour period on April 21.  According to event organizers, David Manis ’13 (Business) and Sarah Sobel ’13 (Organizational Communication), a total of $24,000 was raised through a series of fundraising events, online outreach for donations to family and friends, Relay For Life teams, raffles, and money that was contributed during the event.  The festivities included performances by several student vocal groups; music provided by DJs from WFNP “The Edge,” the campus radio station; a celebrity look-alike contest; and games. With the support of a Senior Research Fulbright grant, Professor Francois Deschamps (Art) spent the academic year 2010-11 teaching in Bamako, Mali—one of Africa’s fastest growing cities. “Sustainable World: Bamako/New York,” on view through March 30 at the Calumet Gallery in New York City, features photographs by his students from the Conservatoire des Arts et Metiers Multimédia in Bamako and their counterparts from SUNY New Paltz. The exhibition aims to serve as a visual record, presenting issues relative to the search for a sustainable world. Goalkeeper Stephanie Vega ’13 (Elementary Education/History) of New Paltz women’s soccer team was selected to the 2011 D3soccer.com Women’s All-America Third Team, as announced by D3soccer.com. Vega becomes the first All-American in the history of the New Paltz women’s soccer program. Vega finished the 2011 campaign ranked second in NCAA Division III in save percentage (.914), sixth in NCAA Division III in goalie minutes played (2,106) and 15th in NCAA Division III in goals-against average (0.47). Midfielder/forward Tommy Garafola ’12 (Communication & Media) of the New Paltz men’s soccer team has been selected to the 2011 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Upstate Division III Men’s Soccer First Team by the ECAC. This honor supplements a pair of additional postseason awards that he has accrued in the past two months, as he was named First-Team All-State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) and National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) NCAA Division III Second-Team All-East Region. Campus Auxiliary Services awards scholarships

Campus Auxiliary Services’ (CAS) Board of Directors awarded six scholarships of $575 to each of the following current students who are employed by CAS, Sodexo Dining Services, or Validis Resources: Jessica Abrams Julian Burnet Faathyma Clark Leah Fuller Aswani Matta Stephanie Novak Applicants were asked to write a few paragraphs explaining the ways in which working for Campus Auxiliary Services has been a positive experience. Each applicant’s supervisor provided comments on the employee’s work attitude and reliability. A sub-committee of the CAS Board reviewed the applications and made the final decisions.

Senior’s essay published in The New York Times

Andrew Limbong’s ’11 (Creative Writing) essay, “Eating the Forbidden Ham Sandwich,” was chosen as runner-up in The New York Time’s “Modern Love” essay competition. His essay was published in the Style section on May 5, 2011. Limbong’s essay was selected from a field of approximately 1,400 submissions. He is the second New Paltz student in the English Department in three years to be selected as runner-up for this essay competition. Lee Conell ’09 (English), who is currently pursuing a master’s degree in English here, was the runner-up in 2008 for her essay titled “My Dropout Boyfriend Kept Dropping In.”...
