As Cynthia Farrell Johnson ’76 (Art History) watched the unveiling of a memorial bust dedicated to Sojourner Truth at the U.S. Capitol in April, she thought of her alma mater. “A flood of memories came rushing back from my days at SUNY New Paltz,” she said. “The books and periodicals that I shelved in the World Study Center made me curious about how people lived beyond our borders. The all Faculty and Staff Appreciation Picnic and Barbecue was held  from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19, on the Old Main Quad. Members of the campus administration served a barbecue lunch. The 2009 Classified Staff Presidential Awards were presented to 10 college employees.

After leading academic life at New Paltz for a decade, Lavallee is stepping down from his administrative post and returning to the classroom. By Danielle Chery ’09 (Journalism) Public Affairs intern The benefits of the Old Main Building renovation can already be seen in the amount of materials being recycled and reused from the construction site. The college is well on its way toward receiving Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. LEED provides a list of standards for environmentally sustainable construction, said Director of Facilities Design and Construction John McEnrue. Campus community will highlight its academic achievements at May commencement ceremonies

On May 17, a crowd will gather on the Old Main Quad to celebrate the accomplishments of the 863 students participating in the May 2009 Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony. Another guest of honor at the ceremony will be singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant, who will receive an honorary Doctorate of Music. College President Steven Poskanzer will serve as master of ceremonies and David Lavallee will also address the candidates. Lavallee, who will join the faculty in the Chemistry Department in the fall, will reflect on his decade as leader of the academic division. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m....
