Women’s basketball team wins SUNYAC championship

New Paltz women’s basketball team achieved its first-ever State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title in 2013, which also gave the Hawks their first-ever bid into the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament. Alumnus makes $5,000 gift to Summer Internship Scholarship for New Paltz students

Jeffrey Korn ’79 (Communication Studies, Political Science) has made the initial gift to the 2013 Summer Internship Scholarship Fundraising Campaign for the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (LA&S). Korn donated $5,000 to the fund, which is intended to make it possible for students to participate in low-paying or unpaid summer internships that are relevant to their areas of study. Haggerty English Language Program faculty Sarah Elia ’08g (Secondary Education) and Jessica Marchi ’10g (Secondary Education) are receiving attention—nationally and internationally—for their research in instructional technology. Their focus is on free, easy-to-use- technology, such as websites and apps, and smartphone features like the camera and voice recorder. “Our students are already using this technology,” notes Elia, who was recently voted second vice president-elect of New York State Teachers of English as a Second Language (TESOL) organization. With three weeks to go in this friendly competition, Recyclemania is once again helping to reduce waste and increase recycling activities and awareness on campus. Two exhibitions on view this spring at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art on campus provide a nuanced glimpse of the people and culture of the West African nation of Mali. Malian Portrait Photography features work by some of the best-known West African photographers, such as Seydou Keïta and Malick Sidibé. Campus farmers market thrives in winter

Fresh produce, vegan cookies, and free hot apple cider are just a few of the items that have been drawing students, staff and faculty to the campus farmer’s market this winter.  The market was conceived of in 2009 by the College’s Environmental Task Force and Students for Sustainable Agriculture, with input from local farmers including Dan Gunther of Brook Farm. In an effort to encourage and support the involvement of Undergraduate Students in a research experience, the Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities (RSCA) program encourages faculty mentors to participate in the SUNY New Paltz Undergraduate Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE). The focus of this research program is to encourage student participation in faculty-mentored research, scholarship, or creative activities that generate new knowledge or works. Funding will support faculty-mentored undergraduate research projects performed over an 8-week period (typically May 28-July 19) during summer 2013. Financial aid awards will be easier to analyze thanks to a standardized Financial Aid Award Letter that New Paltz, and other SUNY campuses, will adopt for the 2013-14 academic year. The letter is part of the SUNY Smart Track™ campaign, SUNY’s broader commitment to transparency in college financing. Tax time is upon us, and the School of Business is here to help! Certified student volunteers, who have received training from the IRS, will be available to help individuals with a gross income below $50,000 prepare their basic tax returns. In addition to free tax return preparation assistance, students are also providing free electronic filing (e-filing).
