by Danielle Chery ’09 (Journalism) Public Affairs intern The poetry of Langston Hughes comes alive with the Theatre Arts Department’s production of “Blood Wedding,” which runs through April 26. “Blood Wedding” was written by Federico Garcia Lorca and is directed by Anita Gonzalez (Theatre Arts). Gonzalez said Hughes, who is best known for his work during the Harlem Renaissance,   captures the sense of desire and betrayal that permeates the emotive life of almost all of the characters. College embarking on redesign of its Web site

The college’s Web site, www.newpaltz.edu, is getting a new look later this year and the Office of Public Affairs is looking for input from the campus community. Rachel Reuben (Public Affairs), director of Web Communication and Strategic Projects, anticipates a fall 2009 time frame for the launch of the new site to go along with the college’s new branding campaign. This will mark the sixth time the site has been redesigned since it was launched in 1995. The most recent redesign was unveiled in January 2005. Singer-songwriter and public advocate Natalie Merchant will receive an honorary Doctorate of Music at the college’s Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony on May 17. “Awarding Ms. Merchant with an honorary degree will be a fitting way to acknowledge her commitment to our state’s artistic heritage and health, her direct contributions to the SUNY New Paltz community, and will serve as an ideal way to show our appreciation for this much valued relationship,” said College President Steven Poskanzer. Computer Science professor Keqin Li earns Distinguished Professor title

Now that Keqin Li (Computer Science) has achieved the rank of Distinguished Professor, he is determined to work harder than ever. “This is a new beginning,” he said. “I now have to hold myself to a higher set of criteria.” In March, Li was appointed to Distinguished Professor, the highest faculty designation the State University of New York can confer.
