The conversation, “Native American Identity: A Conversation About M. Scott Momaday’s ‘The Names: A Memoir,’” by Laurence Hauptman (History) has been selected for inclusion in the New York Council for the Humanities newest program, the “Conversations Bureau.” The “Conversations Bureau” was developed to engage the public in conversations promoting thoughtful, engaged community dialogue based on a short text related to American identity. Hauptman’s conversation will be featured on the “Conversations Bureau” Web site (currently in development) for the 2011 season. Reva Wolf (Art History) was invited to speak on Andy Warhol’s work as a photographer in connection with an exhibition of Warhol’s photographs at the Chazen Museum of Art at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Wolf’s lecture was held just prior to the exhibition opening on Oct. 15. Ron Knapp (Geography Emeritus) gave lectures titled “Discovering China’s ‘Forgotten’ Bridges” during Sept. and Oct. for the departments of architecture at Cornell University, Hong Kong University, and at the HKU Shanghai Study Center. On June 11 Richard Kelder (Director, Teaching/Learning Center) gave a presentation in Washington, D.C., at the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) Conference on the state of higher education. Kelder’s topic was titled “The Challenge to Academic Freedom and the Mission of Higher Education.” Ted Clark (Marketing) gave a talk “Wine, Lobsters and Market Research” at the 4th Annual Hudson Valley Business Edge conference in Fishkill, N.Y. on May 17. In celebration of Women’s History Month an exhibit, titled “Women and Social Movements,” will be on view March 2 – March 20 at the Sojourner Truth Library. The exhibit, exploring women’s involvement in movements for social justice and self determination, has been organized by faculty and students from the Women’s Studies Program, the Latin American Studies Program, the Department of Secondary Education, the Department of Educational Studies, the Feminist Collective, the Samuel Dorsky Museum and the Sojourner Truth Library. A.J. Williams-Myers (Black Studies) has been awarded a $600 honorarium from the New York Council for the Humanities for facilitating the “Cultural Crossroads at the Hudson River Valley” book discussion series at the Senate House State Historic Site during spring 2010. The four-session series, which is part of the Council’s “Reading Between the Lines” program, will include 90-minute discussions about the development of the Hudson River Valley region, and the ethical dilemmas, power dynamics and social and psychological tensions involved in the settlement of the Valley. Aaron Haselton (Biology) presented a research poster coauthored by Angela Acevedo ‘09 (Biology), Hannah Lewis-Rosenblum (University of Florida) and Preeti Dhar (Chemistry) at the 57th Annual Meeting of the Entomological Society of America in Indianapolis, IN on Dec. 16. The poster was titled “Repellency of Pinenes Against the House Fly, Musca Domestica” and detailed the research group’s work on the development of novel, plant-derived insect repellents.
