PUBLICATIONS Giordana Grossi (Psychology), Jeremy Murphy ’06 (Psychology) and Josh Boggan ’04 (Psychology) published “Word and Pseudoword Superiority Effects in Native Italian-English Bilinguals” in Bilingualism: Language and Cognition. Eugene Heath (Philosophy) co-edited a collection of essays, “Adam Ferguson: Philosophy, Politics and Society,” which was recently published by Pickering and Chatto (London, 2009). This is Heath’s second collection on Ferguson, an 18th-century philosopher and historian of the Scottish Enlightenment. Clifford Opurum (Economics) recently published a chapter, titled “Globalization and Regional Integration: The ECOWAS Model, in the textbook Globalization of Business: Theories and Strategies for Tomorrow’s Managers. PUBLICATIONS David Appelbaum (Philosophy) published a new book, “Jacques Derrida’s Ghost: A Conjuration” (SUNY Press, 2009). It addresses three key themes of the late philosopher’s work: the other, death and mourning. In its manner of writing about these themes, the book responds to Derrida’s own reflections on how philosophy is written. On Dec. 4, Appelbaum gave a brief talk about the book on campus. Brian Obach (Sociology) published a book chapter, titled “Labor and the Environment,” in 20 Lessons in Environmental Sociology (Oxford 2009).

Planting for a festive future

More than 100 administrators, faculty, staff and students planting 5,000 tulip bulbs near the Haggerty Administration Building parking lot on Oct. 30. In the spring of 2009, the bulbs will produce red and yellow flowers to mark the Hudson Quadricentennial next year. The college received the bulbs from the Ulster County Quadricentennial Committee.

One Book, One New Paltz features local author

A local author is sharing her story with the New Paltz community for this year’s One Book, One New Paltz program. Ulster County resident Laura Shaine Cunningham’s memoir, “Sleeping Arrangements,” will be the focus of on- and off-campus events from Nov. 16 to 23. Cunningham said she felt “complete joy and amazement” at having her work selected for the community wide project. “The experience of having an entire community reading and discussing my work makes me feel at home,” she said.
