IDMH announces spring conference

The 10th annual Institute for Disaster Mental Health (IDMH) conference will be organized around the theme, “Radical Readiness: Preparing for Dirty Bombs, Nuclear Disaster, and Other Radiation Emergencies.” It will take place on campus on Friday, April 19. The conference will provide training and planning opportunities to strengthen our community’s preparedness for catastrophic radiological events. The conference and training will provide a timely and important opportunity for new information and recommendations to be presented and discussed, and incorporated into planning procedures for multiple organizations that would need to collaborate in any response. Financial Aid office announces new FAFSA application and scholarship workshops

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2013-14 academic year is now available online. Continuing and incoming New Paltz students will find this important information here.  In addition, information about the spring 2013 scholarship workshop series has been announced. The workshops, which will teach skills to help students find funding sources, will be held on Feb. 28, March 12, and March 20 from 1-4 p.m. in the Student Union Building, room 409. Funding available for COIL Conference attendance

The Center for International Programs has announce that funding is available for up to five faculty members to attend the Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) Conference in New York this April. Funding will cover the registration fee for faculty interested in developing a collaborative online course with an international partner. Priority will be given to those faculty members with no prior involvement with COIL courses. Contact Christian Speedling, study abroad advisor, for more information.

New virtual tour launched

Prospective students now have a new opportunity to see our campus before visiting, or learn more about our offerings when they return home from an in-person tour. The new virtual tour features a scripted introduction to more than two dozen buildings on campus, along with traditional photos, 360-degree photos, and videos. The virtual tour results from a collaborative effort between the Office of Admissions and the Office of Communication and Marketing. DegreeWorks is coming!

Preparations are continuing for the transition to DegreeWorks, a new, easy-to-use, web-based academic advisement tool that will replace the current Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS). DegreeWorks will combine student records data with course catalog information to create individualized progress reports that can be easily read and understood by students and faculty alike. The tool is being rolled out incrementally, and most of the student body will be using it by the fall 2013 semester. Astronomy Nights resume

With a new projection system in the John R. Kirk Planetarium, the Astronomy Nights program of planetarium shows and observatory viewings will resume on the first and third Thursdays throughout the spring semester. Professor James Halpern (Psychology) was deployed by the American Red Cross Mid-Hudson Valley Chapter to volunteer in Newtown, Conn., in the weeks following the tragic school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. While in Newtown, Halpern provided emotional support and grief counseling to first responders, members of the community, family members and classmates of the victims. He was stationed in the Family Assistance Center, was present at President Obama’s visit with victim’s family members, and supported the interfaith vigil at Newtown High School.
