Autumn Astronomy Night program underway

Stargazers, take note: the popular Astronomy Night program has begun its fall season, with an indoor planetarium show at the John R Kirk Planetarium in the CSB lobby followed by outdoor telescope viewing at Smolen Observatory (if skies are clear). The program is free and open to the public. The planetarium show will begin at 7:30 p.m. and the observatory will be open from 8:30-9:30 p.m. on Oct. 4, Oct. 18, and Nov. 1. Annual volunteer fair held at New Paltz

The SUNY New Paltz Annual Volunteer Fair, sponsored by the Career Resource Center, was held on Tuesday, Sept. 11, a National Day of Service. Attendees had access to a micro-volunteering opportunity set up directly outside of the Multipurpose Room (MPR), in which they were able to volunteer a few minutes of their time with the O+ Festival, which pairs medical, dental, and other wellness providers with artists that barter for their services. Professor Anita Gonzalez (Theatre Arts) completed five weeks of study this summer in Mystic, Conn., where she participated in a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Summer Institute for College and University Faculty.  Gonzalez was chosen from numerous candidates to participate in the Institute held from June 25 − July 27. “The American Maritime People” was a multi-week symposium on American maritime history from the colonial era to the present.  The purpose of the “American Maritime People” was “to provide college teachers with the opportunity to enhance course offerings by studying the influence of maritime activities on U.S. history...

President Christian joins AAC&U leadership group

President Christian has accepted an invitation to join the Presidents’ Trust, a leadership group within the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) that is committed to and advocates for liberal education within the nation’s higher education system. New Paltz’s Office of Communication and Marketing was recognized by The State University of New York Council for University Advancement (SUNYCUAD) with three Awards for Excellence. The recognition included two Best of Category awards: one in the Media Relations category for its 9/11 Tenth Anniversary Commemorative Events and one in the Student Recruitment Package category for its admissions package that incorporated the elements of print, video and the web. You may have—okay, you likely have—noticed a construction project or two upon your return to campus. Hopefully, you’ve had a chance to stroll down the new Mohonk Walk, a beautiful pathway that provides pedestrian access along the College’s eastern edge (between the Excelsior Concourse and the site of the future new science building near the campus’s main entrance). Take note: beautification of the surrounding landscape is continuing. The walk was lined recently with oak trees and stone benches are being installed. Solar Car Team competes in American Solar Challenge

New Paltz’s Solar Car Team placed 11th out of 16 national teams to compete in the 2012 American Solar Challenge (ASC) Road Race from July 14 to 21. The eight-day race covered a 1,650-mile-plus route passing through eight states that border the Great Lakes. It started in Rochester, N.Y., and ended in St. Paul, Minn. The eastern edge of campus will soon be much easier, safer, and more scenic for pedestrians. Built along the footprint of an old village road, the new Mohonk Walk will provide foot access between the Excelsior Concourse and the site of a future new science building near the campus’s main entrance. U.S. circuit judges tour the Dorsky

David Dorsky, president of the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art Advisory Board, and President Donald Christian welcomed visiting U.S. circuit judges, from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and their spouses, to the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art on June 7. Susana Torruella Leval, curator of the current Eugene Ludins: An American Fantasist exhibition in the museum, addressed the group and led them on a tour of the exhibition. Leval’s husband is U.S. Circuit Judge Pierre N. Leval, who also participated in the tour.
