The John R. Kirk Planetarium will unveil a new digital projector at a public showing on April 11 at 7:30 p.m. The event will be preceded by a V.I.P. reception and showing, to which the College’s cabinet, deans, chairs of the School of Science and Engineering, members of the School’s advisory committee, and members of the local community with ties to the planetarium have been invited. The new projector, which is completely digital and runs using software called Stellarium, provides a more immersive, transformative experience and creates a more dynamic atmosphere for viewers. Student hears Supreme Court oral arguments

Nineteen students participated in the Political Science and International Relations Club trip to Washington, D.C., March 24-26. One of those students, Darienn Powers ’14 (Political Science), who is the club’s secretary and took a lead role in planning the trip, also planned an extraordinary journey of her own. With the goal of hearing the oral arguments before the Supreme Court in the case about Proposition 8, the law banning same-sex marriage in California, Powers made sure she arrived sufficiently early to get one of the 50-60 seats available to members of the public. Congratulations to five New Paltz seniors who have been chosen to receive Chancellor’s Awards for Student Excellence! The awards recognize exceptional achievements demonstrated by each of the students in their academic and other endeavors, as well as their successes in a variety of leadership roles. President Christian and Vice President Rooney participated in the Chancellor’s recognition ceremony, which was held in Albany on April 4. Autism awareness on campus

In honor of Autism Awareness Month, New Paltz’s student organization, Autism Speaks, has teamed up with Student Activities, the Disability Resource Center, and Campus Auxiliary Services to host three events on campus in April. On April 1, Cameron Kirkpatrick, a local high school senior with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, spoke about the challenges he has overcome due to his disability.  On April 3, a short film entitled, “The Asperger’s Difference,” was shown and discussed.  On April 20, an Autism Awareness Walkathon, complete with food, raffles, and giveaways, will be held on campus. Call for Commencement marshals and marchers!

All members of the campus community are invited and encouraged to participate as marshals, and all professional faculty and staff, are invited to march, in the upcoming May Commencement Ceremonies for our August/December 2012 graduates and May/August 2013 candidates. The Graduate Ceremony will be held on Friday, May 17, 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m., on Old Main Quad. Marshals will need to report at 4 p.m. The Undergraduate Ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 19, 10 a.m.-noon, also on Old Main Quad. Forums held on campus invite comments on draft strategic plan

Open forums, held on April 1 and 2, provided opportunities for the campus community to respond to the initiatives outlined in the draft strategic plan, which was previously circulated by the Strategic Planning Steering Committee. The draft strategic plan will guide many of the decisions and planning for the College over the next three-to-five years.
