National Eating Disorders Week events aimed at educating campus community

Monday, February 9th, 2009

The Psychological Counseling Center is sponsoring a series of events during National Eating Disorders Week, Feb. 22-28.

Mark Balaban, senior counselor and eating disorders specialist with the Psychological Counseling Center, organized the weeklong program along with a number of faculty, staff, student and off-campus groups.

“Our goal is to raise awareness about issues related to eating and body images,” said Balaban. “These issues are particularly relevant to college populations, and it is important that our students know about them and the resources available on campus.”

The week’s events open at 2 p.m. on Feb. 22 in the Student Union Building Room 100 with a vigil for people with eating disorders, sponsored by Delta Phi Epsilon.

The two main events are a screening of the documentary “Do I Look Fat?” on at 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 23 in Lecture Center 100 and a one-woman show, “Size Ate,” at 7 and 9 p.m. on Feb. 26 in McKenna Theatre. Both events are free and open to the public,  but  tickets must be picked up in the Student Activities Office in the Student Union Building.

The following events round out the week: Body Image and Eating Disorders Awareness Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 23 in Student Union Building room 100; caricature artist drawings aimed at raising awareness of body image from noon to 4 p.m. on Feb. 24 in Student Union Building room 100; and four performances of “Hungry, Why Weight?” written by the campus’s Undergraduate Psychology Association in various residence halls, beginning at 9 p.m. on Feb. 25. The week culminates with a performance by slam poet “Tennessee” Mary Fons at 8 p.m. in Student Union Building room 100.
