This is the third in a series of profiles featuring faculty and staff members who are using Technology in the Classroom to enhance the educational experiences of their students.
Class participation just a click away

Students use their clickers to answer questions during a class lecture.
Kimberly Lukaszewski (Business) has implemented the Audience Response System in her classroom as a way to encourage student participation.

An Automated Response System clicker
Students are assigned handheld remote controls, known as clickers, during the semester. The clickers have a keypad that is used to answer questions during lectures and presentations. Lukaszewski said the tools also allow students, who are not comfortable with speaking out, the chance to have an active role in the classroom.
Lukaszewski has used the clickers in her Principles of Management course this semester, as well as last semester, and in her graduate course, Human Resource Management. She learned about the clickers from a teaching effectiveness conference hosted by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).
Giving students the chance to participate in presentations and lectures by responding to interactive questions was the main reason she selected the tool.
“It can break up lectures by setting aside time for posing questions and gathering opinions,” said Lukaszewski.

Responses from the students' answers are displayed on a screen in the front of the classroom.
Her students agree.
Renju Vattasseril ’11 (Pre-Management), who takes Principles of Management with Lukaszewski, said it is important for a 21st-century institution to be up-to-par with the technology that is available on the market. He said the clickers allow students, especially those reluctant to speak up in class, the change to take part in a lecture.
“It provides them with a vital opportunity to actively participate in class and retain more information than they would from an ordinary lecture,” said Vattasseril.
